Forest school is an outdoor learning experience where children connect with nature through lots of different activities.
At Egerton, we have a wonderful forest school site connected to our playground that gives children the opportunity to learn in the wonderful outdoors. Our site is surrounded by half an acre of woodland containing a variety of younger and more mature trees and has a stream running through it. It contains two seating circles with fire pits, a vegetable patch and an outdoor classroom with seating for a full class.
Forest school aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners. Our forest school sessions aim to develop, where appropriate, the physical, social, cognitive, linguistic, emotional and spiritual aspects of each and every learner. Through using basic tool and learning campfire safety, the children are able to take small risks in a safe environment. Reflective practice is a feature of each session to ensure learners and practitioners can understand their achievements, develop emotional intelligence and plan for the future.
At Egerton, we use our forest school sessions to help embed learning throughout the curriculum and make many cross curricular links through outdoor learning. Giving the children first-hand experience outside which really brings our learning to life. Every year group links are created in science, history, geography, art and design technology.
