History

The teaching of History at Egerton is an ambitious part of the curriculum, with its coverage of teaching all the Historical skills to all. We aim for a high quality History curriculum which should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our unique Historical curriculum offers all of the National Curriculum guidelines and through its fresh delivery we ensure that children have the key knowledge, skills, values and the intention to improve every students’ cultural capital, understanding of the world around them. Learning in History lessons within the curriculum involves a lasting change in pupils’ capabilities or understanding of the historical skills and facts.  We know that learning about the past at Egerton occurs in a variety of ways, and we understand that pupils have only learnt something if they have integrated it into their long term memory thus resulting in a change of capability and understanding which couldn’t previously be demonstrated before.

Our broad and rich Historical curriculum is progressive and builds on prior knowledge and skills. We ensure that all learning builds towards an end point, that the children can take into their next stage of their learning and make connections with the world around them and have a deeper understanding of choices that were made and the impact they had on their lives today.

At Egerton, we have designed our History curriculum with the intent that our children will :-

  • become increasingly critical and analytical thinkers.
  • have a secure understanding of the chronology of Great Britain and other important periods of history across the world.
  • deepen their knowledge and explanations of change and continuity over time with regards to the history of Great Britain and other societies.
  • be able to differentiate between source types and explain how interpretations in History may differ
  • be able to confidently draw on similarities and differences within given time frames and across previously taught History topics
  • be given the opportunity to enquire in to Historical themed questions and form their own opinions and interpretation
